How does a tensile membrane structure project begin?

Every project starts with concept design and form-finding. Unlike conventional buildings where the architect designs a shape and engineers verify it, tensile membrane structures require the shape and the structural behavior to be developed simultaneously.


Our design team uses specialized analysis software such as SFCAD and 3D3S to model the interaction between steel, cables, and membrane. The goal is to find a stable equilibrium shape — one that distributes forces evenly and performs well under wind, rain, and snow loads. At this stage, the architect’s design intent is translated into a geometrically viable membrane form.

Canobbio Asiatex’s design and commercial team, based in Guangzhou, works directly with architects and engineering partners during this phase, providing early-stage structural feedback that prevents costly redesigns later.
